Royal Oaks Taxidermy- When Quality Counts...

WWW
« on: August 16, 2008, 12:09:50 AM »

Anyone here ever mount a lifesize horse?

Had a lady flag me down today while in town, her horse apparently is going to be put down soon and she wanted to see if Id mount it..

Can someone tell me if they are greasy like other domestics or any special care needed? IM going to send it to the tannery, dont even want to mess with it here..

Also what would you all get price wise for something like this? IM thinking about elk size, but domestic plus lots of altering and such.. Is 7,000 or 8,000 about right? More? Less? My first thought was around 10,000 but I dont want to price myself out of a job yet I do want to make it worth my while..

If she wants it 10,000 is not out of the question you are dealing with a pet and you should be payed well for that.

That was my initial thinking as well.. But I do want to be fair.. I keep thinking if all the alterations LOL.. I know its definetly gonna be a big project.. Not like they have ready made horse forms that actually look like a horse..
The ones Ive seen are rather blah and look more like an over sizzed zebra.

All the more reasons to charge well for it those type of customers do not understand Alterations so charge up front for them.

!0,000 seems low.  I'd charge 9,500 for a moose, you're gonna have a lot of work ahead of you. Definitely do your homework.  Good luck.

People want there pets mounted at 1st. Then 6 months later when it's done and there just getting over it  passing they change there mind or you hear, It does not look like spot did ! I tell most people no or come back in a month & if they do , I tell them spot is gone and this will be a  mounted dog ( horse ) not spot. Also on pets get full payment up front . Gitting stuck $200 or $500 on a small pet sucks $10,000 dam that would suck big time !

Oaks...what kind of horse is it. There would be a huge difference in a Quarter horse and an Arabian. Also you must research the availibility of mannikins and all the alterations you will have to do. These large and out of the ordinary mounts are very time consuming and require a great deal of thought. 10 grand may sound good at first glance but untill you research this project and get some advice from others that have worked on large projects it may not be close to what you need. Talk to the horse owner, go look at the horse, get some pics and general measurements before you ever quote a price on this kind of project.

Lone wolf has good advice. $10000 seems on the low side to me.

I did a huge black stallion at a studio I worked at a couple of years ago. Had to alter a standing form to a rearing form and make it quite a bit bigger. I believe the customer paid $20,000 to have it done. They're a lot of work.
