alligator tanning smell
«

I have an alligator that has been in Safety Acid pickle. This Thurs will be two weeks. I have started noticing a strong odor from the solution & gator. Is this normal? I planned on neutralizing the gator this Thurs a.m. then submerging in EZ100. Then applying liquatan. I cleaned the gator very well & sinuses are out as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Melissa - have you been checking your pickle's pH about every 1-2 days to make sure its below a 2.0 during this time? And also stirring the pickle once a day to avoid mold growth? There shouldnt be a powerful smell associated with pickling the skin, so it sounds like something is amiss. Without that info, it's hard to even guess.
As for using EZ-100 and then LiquaTan - why apply a tanning agent twice? If you really want only the benefit of the oil in liquatan, it would be a lot cheaper to purchase a good tanning oil instead.

Thanks Bruce for the help. After closer examination of the gator, foulnd small amount of flesh in the tail. Smelling pretty bad. Started a new pickle bath. Then I will use EZ100.
Thanks,
Melissa
