I have a Dakota Pro I have always thought the machine of mine had too much vibration from the get go. There is some play in the blade, at least a 1/16 or more. I called VanDykes and they said there would be "some" play. If you tap the blade with your finger the blade moves, if you grab it you can jiggle it, in most cases a 1/16 isn`t much but in machinery it is alot.I also own a Dakota IV and there is absolutely no movement at all. I do on occasion get a little "goughy" on my shaving but I attribute that to me. Is this amount of play exceptable or should I change the bearing? Thanks Phil

Ive never had any play in mine.. but its an Eager Beaver.. Matter of fact just to get some of blades off and on I have to tap them with a rubber mallet.. They fit snug..I cant image why they would say play is normal? Seems to me if the blade wiggles it could cause problems.. but that is just my thought..

Yeah there is no play in mine either .. sounds like yours may have an issue. Vibration=uneven and difficult shaving!

The blade fits the arbor fine and like yours need a little manipulation to get it off. It jiggles when everything is tightened down and ready to shave. If you take the blade off you can move the arbor, not as much because when the blade is on there is more leverage to move the blade. If it moves a 1/16 in 6'' (1/2 the diameter) it would move 1/8" in 12" etc. Anyone with any type machine feel free to chyme in, I value any input.

I am not familiar with the Dakota Pro, but it sounds like a bad bearing to me.

It isnt considered abnormal for bearings to fail. It happens, and if that arbor can be moved even slightly, I agree with a few of the other posts - the bearing may be shot, or breaking up on you. I'd consider replacing it. It should be very positively unmovable.

Hudson,

It certainly sounds like the bearings to me. If you will call 800-539-3169 and talk to Jay we will be glad to have new bearing put in for you.

Hi Paul E -
Sorry - I didnt mean to imply they always go - but just like "Monday Morning Cars" they do sometimes fail. No matter how good a machine may be. Fortunately for Hudson - Van Dykes (Olaus) has offerred to help him out on this one. That's great customer service!
