A Bad Day!
«

Well, actually it started last night when I got home from work. (and I'm glad it did) When I walked in the house at 11:30 pm, I noticed A box from a supplier sitting on the counter. So I decided to go out to the shop and open it up to make sure I got everything I ordered. The box had the earliners I'd been waiting for. So I decided to get a deer cape out of the freezer to thaw for the morning. As I opened the freezer my heart sank. The freezer had gone out. I took out all the capes, skins, and critters and started checking to see how bad they were. Luckily, the freezer must have went out yesterday sometime and most things were still 1/2 frozed. About %85 were wet tanned deer capes and some other wet tanned critters. The worst thing was about an inch of water in the bottom. I transfered some of the stuff to the other freezers and finished up around 2am.
I got up at 8am today and went freezer huntin to Lowe's, Home Depot, and Best Buy. Anyway, I ended up getting a display freezer and they knocked off about $50. I was happy. We loaded up the freezer and off I went. I stopped at a gas station and bought a much needed cup of coffee and was on my way home. I got the new freezer unloaded and plugged in and decided to go put that deer together. I got the form prepped and while I was setting the antlers I dropped them and they broke in half...which then added even more time to the mount that I really didn't have. I finally got that problem fixed and proceded mounting the deer. I was just finishing sewing it up and my wife walked in the shop and said she needed the credit card back. So I pulled the receipt out of my pocket but could not find the card! I started to panic. Looked in my truck but still no card. We called Lowe's and they remembered me but said they gave it back to me. My wife called and canceled the card. Then it dawned on me... I had that card when I bought that cup of coffee. I took it out of my pocket and set it on the counter, paid my dollar something for the coffee and walked out the door. My wife called the gas station and they said they had our card in their safe. I got lucky...What a day! I hope tomarrow is a little better.

Dang it Todd. I'm new to this and the freezer going out is what I fear. I check mine everyday and still worry about it. Hang in there.

whitetail94....if you are in this business long enough you WILL have a freezer quit on you. Most of us here already have, and I can include myself in that bunch. Here is some good advice. Spend the $14 a piece and get the little external freezer alarms. You can get them through several of the suppliers or Cabelas. Change the batteries at the start of every year and you will have some peace of mind.
It is money well spent.....and besides, we all need more tax write-offs anyway!!

I tried the freezer alarms and out of the three I bought all three went bad within the year. I now use a outdoor thermometer with the lead inserted in the freezer. I only have to look at the guage to check the temp. That was recommended by an appliance store owner by the way.

I have the $15 alarm and it does work....well, it did, might not now, LOL. But that's a great idea Jim, never would've thought of that. Think I'll get one of those too. Can't be too careful.

You have to change the battery. LOL I have had 2 of them going on 4 years and they have saved by butt a few times. All I do is change the battery and they keep on working. I got mine from Cabelas.
I guess a thermometer is fine if you remember to look at it occasionaly. But I like the fact that if I am gone for a weekend and my wife is there she will here the beep if the freezer drops temperature. I know she is not going to remember to go out and look at a thermometer.

The thermometer isn't a bad idea either. But if I can remember to look at the thermometer, then I can remember to stick my hand in the freezer. I have three alarms and all of them still work every time I bug bomb the shop and shut off the power for 1/2 a day.

Maybe we should get together for group therapy as those are exactly the kind of days I have.
