I've joust received these antlers, came from a German ebay auction.

they have about 44" main beams, 11" base, 14" g1 and 13"g4.
Tomorrow maybe i post better pics.
I live in Italy, and this is only the third elk I've ever see in person, the others are a absurdly BIG Canadian and the other one is a Mongolian Wapiti.
so, I have some question  Grin Grin
I know these antlers are at the last nice, for dimension, but how nice?
Someone can help me about origin? Can they came from north America as from Asia, or there are some difference?
As you can see from the photos the antlers are old ( also some lichens on them) and cracked. And have probably a artificial color on them also.
Someone can give me some idea for the restauration?
thanks!
Lorenzo

they came from same animals for sure, same dimension, same surface texture, same base dimension and looks,  and if I can post some more photo you can see that they are much more symmetric you can think from this pics.
They are cutoff.

I agree they are from the dame animal.  If you moved the top of the right antler over about a foot and a half and then rotated it so it was in the same position as the left antler they would look a lot more symmetrical.  Hard to say where they came from but if I were to make a guess it would be either asia or the US west coast.  And the reason I say that is the small kicker point at the top of the antler on the left.  Roosevelt elk will get those crown points but Rock Mountain elk don't typically.  When you do see small kickers on Rocky mountain elk the tend to be inline with the other points but don't kick out like that one in the pic.  Quite often I see them pop out in the web on the upper side of the g4 and the main beam.

If I was going to try to restore them the first thing I wiuld do is rebuild the broken tine with apoxy sculpt.  And then for the cracks I have seen where you can use milled fiberglass powder and fill the cracks and then gel coat over it.  Then it is simply a mater of recoloring them.  I haven't done it yet but I  have a 360 class bull that has weatherchecked that I need to try it on once I get the time.  Good luck.

thanks for your response!
about the origin i know only that the last owner is a "old men" that live in Germany.
Also for me in more easy that a set of "Maral" (Asiatic wapiti) antlers arrive in Germay respect a set from a Elk.
This because I know that in past time there is a big commerce of Siberian roe deer trophy ( that inhabits the same region of wapiti) from ex URSS Countries and can suppose some Wapiti can have the same destiny.
The only ragion I can see that antlers from America can arrive in Germany is that they are a personal trophy of a hunter, but in this case I think that a German hunter don't cut the antlers from the skull... well I know is difficult have a response for this question for sure.
Marty, I'm very interested in your observation about tine position etc! And thanks for give me some idea for restoration.
Vellu, can You explain me why you think they came from a Maral instead a Elk?
thankyou again!

Well i dont believe they are a match either, bases look diff and all tines are different patterns all together, but sweet deal any way. i see lots of bulls, mounting and hunting. the gel coat works as i did it on a mulie set thats about 240 b&c and 40 +". worked great and no one has noticed yet.... have fun.
