OK, let me land the plane. I know exactly what is in Krowtann but have been sworn to secrecy and threatened with bodily harm if I ever told.  lol.  I know because I told the inventor of Krowtann about a product  that a vendor who was a chemist had shared with me. I put the two together and a fuctional and marketable version of Krowtann was born. The inventor had used the process for years but had to mix a fresh batch every time. The chemist knew a way to "suspend" certain components and make it work. Krowtann IS a complete and thorough tan. It just doesn't require the separate steps Georges Granny told him it did. I do not have any connection to the product and do not make any profit from it's use. I endorse it because it works. I still love George, He can dig a trench with a shovel instead of a backhoe as long as he wants to.

Geez Michael, will ya just say it already? Gad, you know youre busting at the seams to say, lol. Ok, dont, we all already know anyway. As for tanning, when is someone (like me?) going to just call it stabilizing a skin, and not worry about tan, leatherizing, etc? If its stable, wont shrink much, has shelf life, memory and holds its color, lets just do it!

And Rick knows I still love and respect him - even in the morning.  We just won't ever agree on this one so we'll be content in disagreeing.  My first, last, and only question is, "If it were REALLY a total and complete tan, why aren't the commercial tanneries jumping all over it as it would cut their workload easily in half?"  As for me, I still DP squirrels to coyotes and I won't change my opinion on THAT either.

After over 40 years of tanning hair-on and leather and (I have tested Krowtan myself ) I can tell you It will never equal Lutan F or any of the other Lutan products.
The finished schrink tempature is very low indicting a very low cross link and fixation.  I can get to 170 degrees with alum or Lutan F and I did not make it to 130 with Krowtan. Three years ago I took a serious look at it to use for in house tanning , and while it works for some it schrinks more and is not as good as what we compare it to.
I know Krowtan works for a lot of taxidermist and my comments are based on testing and experience.
I have contacted the folks in Arkansas several times and not once have they answered any questions about this product.

I can also tell you formic acid pickle followed with a good swabbing oil will produce the same results as far as mounting a deer goes.
Also in the tanning industry there is no secret what tanning agents will suspend in formic acid and in this case they are used as a pre-tan and pickle at the same time.
In the taxidermy industry there are many things that work for many people and suppliers.  If you like what what you are doing then don't worry about it .

One last shot. You guys are continuously confusing tanning for TAXIDERMY with tanning for leather. The two are not comparable. I do not care how hard a hide gets when a mounted deer dries. It's OK if it's as stiff as cardboard when it dries on the mannikin. All that matters is that it limits shrinkage and sticks to the glue and holds up till it's sold at a yard sale. It doesn't need a ton of oil crushed into it from a kicker machine. In fact, lots of oil will make the deer drum when it dries because it will not stick to the paste. Krowtann is a product that taxidermists can use on a daily basis that works for them. They dont have to own $75,000 worth of equipment and be a chemist to use it.
Tanning for leather means it may become a rug or garment or upholstery. At this point it must be soft and pliable. Shrinkage doesn't even make very much different because the hide is already dry.  I agree that Krowtann used as directed will not make a hide as soft as the long rout George described. You would have to add in the professional shaving, tumbling, kicking and drum sanding. A soft crushed tan has ALWAYS been much more about elbow grease than it has about which chemical you used.

Naaaa!...It may close this chapter?...It depends on George's mood today!...But to totally end the "Is Krowtann a Real Tan" argument would take days and cost Thousands of life's!

I don't care if it's a real tan or not, heck DP sure isn't a tan, but it still works Wink I like it and until I find a reason to not like it, I will continue to use it.
