Hello,
I have a customer who wants a posturing deer mount with it's hair standing up. Does anyone have a suggestions on how to accomplish this. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I do several aggressive poses every season and stand the hair up on the neck and forehead by grooming the deer until the skin dries. I start back brushing it after it is mounted and do this a couple times a day for 3-4 days.

I do not have any experience with this but i think i seen rick carter use a gel to hold the hair down maybe you could use it to hold it up, not sure what he was using maybe someone here could help you with the name of the product.

Back brush and keep doing so till the mount is dry. Also try using some high-hold hairspray to hold the "style" lol, get it from a salon, not the cheap stuff at Walmart which usually doesn't work as well. I did a mount like this and it turned out nice.

sawdust, dump it heavy on the hair, back brush it and it will fall to the root area and hold the hair as it is brushed back, when it is dry, just blow it out. Hair gel is gunky, dries stiff. Having slack in the skin goes along way, having to big a form and a tight fit will not let hair stand up no matter how much gunk you put in the hair. Sawdust, pile it on, back brush it in.

All the tips are good, but I don't see anyone giving him the correct foundation (Mr. T almost said it).  When you are mounting the deer DO NOT PULL THE DORSAL NECK SKIN TAUT.  If you do, backbrushing, compressed air, Dippetydo, NOTHING is going to work in your favor.    Before I nail my hide to the backboard, I back brush it heavily, allowing the hide to slip forward in the glue base  Once I get that excess skin, it's just easier to have the hair "stand up".  You will still have to continue backbrushing for a few days until the hide locks the hair in place.  BTW, do NOT try this with a dry preserved hide.  After about 2 days, your backbrushing is going to turn into making buckskin out of the hide.  The hair gets "loose" with DP after a couple days before it locks in permanently.
