I use a rubber mallet and then submerge in warm water.
They will crawl out of the skull and you can relocate them back in the tank.
You can also clean out all the bug doo this way.

I leave mine up off the bottom so new ones cant crawl in and hit it w/ my hand on the forehead a few times each day. It takes me 2-3 days to get them all out. If you rush it they will be dead & stuck inside. Then its a pain in the a$$ to get them out. you can also put the skull in the freezer if it will fit & check it after 15mins & hit it to knock them out. Do that a few times but don't leave it in there to long or they will freeze & die inside.

Take skull out and shake, tap and whatever you can to get the majority out.  Place inside a container and place in freezer or outside if it is cold!!

They will sense the cold and try to escape, crawling in your container.  Dont let it freeze but you can let it sit for 5-10 minutes inside freezer with no harm.

When they crawl out dump them back in.  They may seem slow, but when they get their temp back, they will be back to normal.

I let mine go hungry for about two days then throw a couple hot dogs in one corner and wait about two hours.  Pull out the completed skulls and put in new ones.  They may not look like they communicate but if they are hungry the whole colony makes a road trip to the new food source like a migration.  They crawl outta the styrofoam and everywhere when they are hungry and lunch is served.  I pushed them a little too far today it was ten degrees and when I opened the lid one musta been sayin P'off, I am outta here.  He popped his wings out and headed off into the snow.

Guess he knew if he didn't one of these days he would make the shop sink flush like a few of the others have.  You always loose a couple not much you can do they repopulate pretty fast as long as they have food so I don't worry about it.
