Dermestid Beetle help
«

I recently acquired my first batch of dermestids to clean some skulls. I put them in a large upright canister in my garage, and covered it with a lid that had little air holes. (for the time being until i could buy a terrerium) I had only had these for a week and they were doing pretty good with cleaning the skull I had in there, and today somebody took the canister and dumped it out all over our gravel driveway. I'm thinking it was my great grandmother (she is getting senile, and is always getting into other people's things, even though it isn't her business) and I guess she didn't like bugs too much. But anyways, I couldn't really save any beetles becaause they were scattered out in the gravel, and I'm worried that they may find their way into the house through the garage and chew up my mounts. How should I kill the remaining beetles so this doesn't happen?

Nina,
Too bad about the loss. I wouldn't worry too much about the beetles. They are common in the wild to the tune of about 20 different species. They also have a lot of natural enemies. Birds being the biggest. If you think they may have gotten to your hides or mounts, any good insecticide will eliminate them. They are actually fairly fragile and keeping a colony can prove to be a lot more work than a terrarium or a trash can. They need humidity, warmth, and darkness.

Nina, Like David said I would not worry about the bugs getting into your house. LOL, they have enough to eat outside. If you need some more bugs I can mail you some out Monday if you keep grandmaw away from them.
