Hey All,

I'm wanting to mount this three footer but can't decide what method. This is my first gator but I've done many snappers. I don't want to use a mannikin and was thinking fish filler. Problem is that I'm wishy-washy and an amature to boot so it takes me awhile to get the shape I want. Fish filler will probably do great in the tail but the legs are what I'm worried about. I keep reading about guys using vermiculite and question the results. I've used fiberglass insulation to stuff turtle legs but I always manage to create a few shrunken spots or worse yet, overstuffing. The fiberglass and vermiculite are similar methods but I'm wondering if any others have these problems with vermiculite. Do you just stuff it dry or wet it down a bit? Lastly, those of you who use vermiculite, where do you get it. Hydroponic shops want a lot for it and when I go to reptile shows they don't ever seem to be able to aquire the quantity I need for a good price. Thanks!

Chip, vermicute is nice to use, because ut allows you to use yor fingers to carve in the muscle structure. You will get mush better results in you use clay in the legs though, and just use the vermiculite to fill out the body cavity. You use it dry, and pack it fairly tight otherwise you will end up with voids. Fiberglass insulation is a VERY poor substitute as it cannot pack tight enough, but if you do get it tight, you cannot carve in any details because it just springs back. You can get it in 4 cubic foot bags at most Agways, or feed and grain stores, or larger outdoor nurseries

Chip,

I got the 4 cubic foot bags of vermiculite from a nursury.  I think they charged $17/bag, and it went farther than I thought it would.  Just make a couple of calls and find one that will get it in for you.
