Ok,  I sent a post earlier but I don't think it ever went so please disregard if you've already seen this one or if I did it wrong..

First of all,  I'm a "hobby" taxidermist but would like to improve and maybe do some commercial work.  Let me tell you the story behind my photo and then I would like your opinions as professional taxidermists.   I did actually shoot this deer out of my bedroom window after hunting for a week straight at our hunting lease.  The photo is an actual blown up picture of my own backyard where I shot the deer....... Now when I tanned the hide,  I had a lot of hair to slip in the shoulder area so I was unable to do a shoulder mount.  I cut it off but it just didn't look right and so I came up with the "buck in the window" idea.  For me,  it tells a story..... but for someone just looking at it,   do you think it's too "cheesy"??    I have gotten a lot of compliments but from coworkers (who know nothing about taxidermy) so just wanted to know your thoughts or suggestions.  I know my mount needs a lot of work.... I've only done a few so far so I'm still learning.  Thanks!!

Well, not cheesy.  But it will rank right up there with mossy horns and guttin stick.

Hey if you like it who cares about anyone else.  My personal opinion, is it looks like something from a puppet show.  My state doesn't allow hunting near or from a house, so if it's illegal by you, I'd delete the forum. Be aware there likely will be guys jumping on you, on this one.

Oh my.  Okay.  Personally...no...not for me.  But...it isn't mine...so my opinion isn't worth a hill of beans.  It'll go in your home...and it's your memories.  If you're going this way, it's cool that the picture is of your actual back yard.  You're going big or going home by putting the blinds up there.  Why not do curtains to match the ones you actually have in your room?

Also, I'd paint the picture so it looks like the buck continues through.  Brown/tan/black/white on the glass/print.  Neck mounts don't look great IMHO but since you've got the illusion of the window going, why not give a visual clue that a part of the mount is actually outside?

Put a shelf along the window sill with a small dish of apples (fake of course) in it. It would then give the buck a reason for sticking his head in the window.

I was within the legal limits where I live ...  and I know a lot of people won't care too much for it but that's ok.  If the majority thinks negative about it then I will know to stay away from this type of work and stick to the basics.  That's all I'm really trying to find out.  Thanks for the input!

Good idea.  Wink

It's not my cup of tea 100% but I think you get an AA++ for creativity. Good suggestions about the apples and making it look as it the buck continues... that's the main thing about it that strikes me as "wrong", the way the neck just ends and seems to be floating. I can see taking that idea further and making a pedestal mount of a buck reaching through the window for goodies on the counter...

Yeah I gotta say, I'm liking it, it reminds me of the coyote mounted to the back of that truck.. sure, it's not particularly class, but I think it's funny and will definitely get some attention. Smiley
