I found this works very well and is much cheaper.

I heard an old friend tell me to try carpet glue for hide paste.  I tried it and it worked great.  You can get it basically anywhere.  The price is much cheaper than hide paste plus you have no shipping charges.

Good Luck!!

About 20 years ago I bought hide past from Van Dyke's, They had a piece of paper on the can that said hide paste, I removed that paper and it said carpet glue.

Jackpot,
Very good - I am with you. I have been using carpet glue on selective mounts for years with great results. I have tried several hide paste that do not work well at all. If someone has a paste recommendation PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I firmly believe some supply companies relabel some products. Example : I ordered from fish fin backing cream a couple of months ago and found it was White Lightening 3006 siliconized latex caulk after peeling off the new label !!!

I am with you guys also. I spend a little more and buy the outdoor carpet glue.  Mainly because it said anti-bacteria on it. Don't know if it works any better but it makes me feel good.  As for it being brittle. Its not. I drys just like Caulk. Very elastic and rubbery.  It is also a B#tch to get off your hands. Angry

I was in construction and remodeling for ten years, any old carpet I have taken up has come right up and the glue was dry and brittle underneath. That is my experience.

I've been doing wood flooring for almost 20 years and I would have to agree with nibjones about old carpet that is glued. Now if it's only been a few years it can be tough, but that would leave me to believe that the glue breaks down with age. JMO

OK maybe it is the type of glue then = I am not so sure. I have spoken with a few Taxidermist that have Best in The World Titles and one uses carpet glue and the other uses a particular brand of wallpaper adhesive. Another friend of mine has been doing taxidermy for 40 years and he uses carpet glue. His older mount (10+ years) still look great. To each his own I guess.

I wonder with the carpet glue that becomes brittle and dry after years of wear and tear due to foot traffic and the various temperatures and chemical components of concrete have anything to do with it breaking down like that. It wouldn't necessarily take that abuse on a taxi job. Just a thought.

Just a thought but would the carpet glue that was used to glue "old" carpets down be totally different from the modern glues. Maybe that is why these old glues are brittle ? Most glues and pastes have changed enormously over the years. Here in the UK most carpet fitters use spray glues now. And we do not use clay based wallpaper pastes over here , everything is PVA based now.
