Im not sure of the actual diameter but its about the size of a tennis ball. And for the nostrils I have a small wooden bat that I cut the end off of.

I have always used a Racquetball ball.  It seems to be just the right size, rubber and has just enough flexibility so not to make as many mistakes.  But I guess overall it's what your used too.

or you could use hardwood table/chair  legs/feet
all sizes..
