I use potassium permagnate, just mix a teaspoon full with 2 ouncesw of alcohol and paint on, will be purple but will turn brown as it dries, then use steel wool to buff off to the color you want and seal with a matte finish clear.

jwj's idea is the best way to go. I have tried other staining methods on sheds and potassium permagnate/alcohol produces the best results. With this I also do a light sanding on the sheds before staining them. This seems to help the stain penetrate better. I know on my sheds, they have a kind of glossy coat on them. If you sand them a lightly if works a lot better. Don't know if others do this too, but works great for me.
