The Week in Fish Pictures" ~Year 3~ Week 24

A big Warm Welcome from Decatur Illinois and the Home of the Illinois Taxidermy Association annual convention and competition!!!! Friday and Saturday the action takes place great seminars and competition pieces get judged and critics are given to the eager competitor’s willingness to learn! This is the first time here at the Illinois Taxidermy association annual convention and I will tell you that from how it all looks this is a first class show and convention center! If you’re competing or not if you’re any where near this are or are just hesitating to stop by the show you should drop by and join the fun! Catch a seminar or just learn about the States association and how it can benefit you as a taxidermist!

The are a few thoughts for this week!
As we all gear up for the 2009 fishing season we all have to realize that we are in an economic time in this country. All this means is that your fish all have to be in a row in order to ride the tied out and back in again. A few weeks ago we talk a little bit about better business ideas and how we all could share in the conversation with what works. I always go back to my personal belief in business that there are 4 key aspects of process to be successful.

1.Quality 2. Turn around time. 3. Price and 4. Consistency.
All the above mentioned in combination can and do make you money however if you learn to work well with in all 4 you can ride times like this out. We all personally may find that the same client mount numbers may be down this year and it may be likely that it cold happen. This doesn’t mean hit the panic buttons it just means you will need to take action other then to accept this and do nothing as your action.

For goodness sake DO not lower your prices!!! Business folks who plan on being here tomorrow will jot do this as it sends a few week messages to your clients. Run specials perhaps to give a 5% discount for cash customers or give a 10% discount for referral with in the year of delivery. Aggressively go after your guild again that is always on of the best places to get referrals. Make it worth their while by offering to turn the service around faster for their clients as a show of good relationships for their effort to you. Today you can also add a guild link to your web site or visa versa to drum business.

Do a bit more to make more! Really make a point of telling an owing your clients the extra you have done for their fish mount that you have never shown them before. (Scale work, different gloss, ect…) Make an effort at managing your time better multi task as you work from one fish to the next. Time is always a great asset you have. If you typically turn around in 6-9 mounts work at 4-6 months to use this to your sales advantage when talking with a client to sell your serves. A client will always like to see there trophy sooner rather then later!!! Lastly consistency is the key to tomorrow. Demonstrate to your client you continue to learn and to grow with knowledge to make a better fish mount for your client! Sell this point to give you distinction from your competition. Those are juts a few idea maybe that will work for you at least food for thought during these times!

So many Talented and gifted fish artists come here each and every week and share with us their passion and inspiration we all can use to motivate us to the next level of satisfaction and success!

WOW!!!  Truly inspirational.  It seems almost impossible to post a fish after all of the great work displayed at the PA convention.  I would like to thank all who post here as you can sure improve your work just off of the pictures displayed here every week.  Here goes a skin mount crappie around 16 1/2 inches.  First time using Jeffs eyes, not real good at painting them but I do like working with them.

This is my white crappie. I think I made my fins and tail a little too dark for a white crappie??? There are a ton of shimmers in this fish you can't see and its color is lighter than the picture. , picture not that good.

I can't even begin to say how beautiful these mounts look.  Some of the bases, pictured above, are sweet.

Holy cow, Touch act to follow this week. Great work everybody.

This one's for you Jimmy. A 48" clear musky customer skin mount. Caught just down the road from my place.

He had a funky looking head.

WOW Perca, you've out done yourself AGAIN!
 Great job Twiggy.
Since I can't spend the afternoon in the studio due to just glossing a pile of fish (too caustic in there) I thought I'd come on and post some pics from this latest batch.
I'll start with crappies since that seems to be the order of the day.
