Just removed the bear rug from the plywood . Head is dried and I noticed the hair is slightly oily on a few spots on the back. Leather does not seem to be oily just the hair. Is there anything I can do??

It could be tanning oil. Does it have any smell to it?

Wash it and hope for the best.
As long as the skin side is tanned, and there is no slipping, it should be fine.

Try pouring some lacquer thinner on it and rubbing the oil out.

Put odorless mineral spirits or thinner on a rag or in some saw dust, rub on areas until oil is absorbed.

Jim B on here suggested something that really works. Take some windex and dip a rag in it and ring it out back into your bucket and wash the spots with it. Then you can blow dry it without having to wash it out. I have done this with numerous l/s and the results are a nice, clean, soft mount.

To who ever reads this in a search Mineral spirits on a rag really cleaned up the oily spots on the bear rug. Great ideas from great guys . Now just to aerate the hide and shop.
