I never had the chance to turn ears for a small rodent and I was wondering with the ear being so small do we still split and salt it?

some do and some don't, if you want your mounts ear to look nice a full you can turn it and put a pinch of clay in to shape it, will look good. if you don't they dry very flat look as thin as paper. the ones that don't turn most times use either foil or clay to shape the ears just pinch on the outside till dry then pull foil off or thump the clay and it will break off leaving your shape, hope this helps.

IMO, If you turn them they look a LOT nicer. When they are just carded they often times shrivel a bit and look nasty.

Its not an opinion its a fact, i used to do the ole tin foil method, but the ears look like literally crap like that.
Turn your ears, either make customer ear liner by casting on a same sized squirrel ear or use apoxie sculpt for you ear.
