putting in a plug for myself---UPDATED

call me an attention hog, a narcissist or plain nuts.
I contacted the paper and they are going to do an article about me attending the world show.
I figured I have two taxidermists competeting with me within about 6 miles, so I'm upping the ante.
The way I look at it, I'm going to take every advantage to let people know that I'm keeping up to date with the industry and attending seminars by the worlds leading professionals....I'm not just some hack that is a "here today, gone tomorrow" type of person.
Am I ego driven....probably!!!

Bobbi any free advertisement you can get go for it. Our paper here would laugh at us if we ask to do a article about taxidermy.

the paper here in town always has deer, turkey, fish and mushroom hunter pictures in it, and since we are a rural community, we have a lot of hunters and farmers.

So??? What makes you any different from the rest of us? Just who we are. We're all bi-polar to some extent and ego driven for one reason or another. If we weren't, we'd be flippin burgers waiting for payday.
The late columnist Ashley Cooper (pen name for Frank B. Gilbreth Jr.) from the Charleston (SC) News & Courier once remarked: "If you don't blow your own horn occasionally, someone's likely to think your battery's dead."

I'm supposed to let them know how that goes Cole.
They wanted to do an article last year, but I declined....that was BEFORE I found out about my competition. If they ask again this year, I may just take em up on it.

Way to go, girl! Take advantage of every opportunity to promote yourself and your business. Our local paper has a Business section, once a week, that contains all sorts of that kind of thing. I'm going to put my attendance in it, too. I'd be willing to bet, that well over half the people at the show never even dream of promoting themselves by their attendance at the World. It's a shame that we don't have better business sence in our industry(maybe that's why it's considered only a "craft" or hobby profession).

Bobbi:
Go for it, there is nothing wrong with free advertising. It shows your commitment to your business and upgrading your skills, along with your accomplishments. Usually I just email them and request they run the(press release )I've provided along with a good quality photo when their time and space permits. Most small newspapers need something to round out their editions.. On the larger papers you may want to make contact with the outdoor and or sports editor.

Absolutley nothing wrong with that. There are many reasons to compete, but if you are trying to build a business, your acomplishments SHOULD be made known. I have always contacted my local newspaper after competition.
