Could someone do a tut about how to how to krowtan a small mammal or game head?  I was just interested. thanks...

I just tanned a deer cape for the first time with Krowtann and before it went in is was a 7 x 18 and after four days in the Krowtann it's a 7 x 14 now not very impressed so far but I going to do some shaving and the guy a Krowtann told me to put tanning oil on it and let it set for a couple hours. But I thought it was a all in one process. If I got to put tanning oil on it I should have just pickled it IMO.

I dont put oil on mine and they come out a little bigger than they went in. I would guess its not propperly shaved and or nutralized.

Uh yeah shaving is a great idea...........  They will shrink in ANY submersible tanning solution.  You have to shave and stretch no matter how you tan it.  But like Brian  I have never had a problem getting back to the original size and could probably go a bit bigger if I wanted.

Well I guess I was just very surprised at the shrinkage in Krowtann. I've always picked and would measure the deer before skinning it and got ahead and order my form and after the pickle never had it shrunk 4" on me like it did in Krowtann and in the pickle didn't have to do much thinning. It was my first time using Krowtann. It just shocked me and I thought I did something wrong. LOL

Measure before skinning?  and order your form off that?   I always measure the carcas and order off that and never had a fit problem once.

That makes no sense what so ever that is about the equivlent of measuring the outside  of a shoe to see if your foot will fit inside  it!   theres 2-3 in difference usually between measuring over the hair and a carcas measurment depending on the season and how thick the hair is.   If you are adding 3 in to the carcas siz by measuring over the hair you are just asking for drumming problems in the low areas and hair patter problems in general.

Makes plenty of sense to me. I measure it as tight as I can get it like choking it. If the neck measures a 18" I get a 18" form. Which leaves about a -1" difference. No drumming problems. Comparing that to a shoe? Come on that was a bad example of measuring. I don't loosely measure it I pull the tape as tight as I can get when ever I measure that way which is not all the time but most. Works for me. I'm not telling anyone to do it i'm just saying it works for me. To the poster sorry to get off topic you can have it back now. LOL Wink
