 Happy birthday "Ake" !
The world of taxidermy was destined for change on 5/19/1864, when Carl Akeley was born.
Your bones may be in Africa and your soul may be with God, but your legacy lives on with us.
Yox and I promise you...it will never die.

John, Did you stay up past midnight to wish Mr Akeley happy birthday? I'd be willing to bet that you are leaving a mark with family and friends, and some, of this industry as well.

Wayne, that's exactly what I did. But you know, it was Akeley who left his mark on us. All I do is brag about (and love) the man for what he gave us. If I could only think of one thing to accredit him with, it was the way he disciplined the world into believing that taxidermists are artists and nothing less.

Joe, I must have sounded like a phone off the hook at times when you were here, but Carl Akeley has a way of doing that to us. You were an absolute joy to have in the AMNH last week. If it were up to me, I'd rename Akeley's African Hall to Akeley's African Chapel. Just think, somewhere on Mikeno, he's up there still...watching over all his gorillas and all 'his' taxidermists.

Very good Joe! You had the honor of having JJ as a guide through the AMNH too? What a treat!

Not to worry Bill. I gave my mom a day off from cooking lunch today in honor of Carl Akeley. You bet he's worth two posts!!!
Why don't you let me know exactly what you will need to mount a deer head using Akeley's method, and I'll get it up there to you. I'm serious too.

Crusty, no 'guiding' I ever did down here comes close to what you did for me up in Alaska last Feb.
I'll never forget it either.

Akeley would have never needed to alter anything. He sculpted the actual model of the mannikin in whatever pose he needed the mount to assume. Once he made the form from the original mold, he wrote that he never had to test the skin before mounting it. It was THE signature difference between the taxidermists of then compared to those of today. The talent is definitely out there...but the gifted ones are few.

Your right Ron! Dave is my alter ego, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, if Dave can't get 'er done, nobody can! He's done mounts for me so well, that Akeley himself would cringe. C'mon, it's Akeley's birthday Ron, I'm not one of the gifted ones trust me. Cut me some slack huh? I'm celebrating all day!
