If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

JJ, youll laugh at this...I met a guy today, says hes from Brooklyn. So I mention I have a friend down that way, you, and offer your family name. He didnt recognize it, thats understandable. So, he then says am I SURE youre from down that way. I said, well, lets put it this way, you refer to pasta sauce as...and he says, as I say it...GRAVY! Lol, then he knew where you were from, and I knew he was from there too.

You two are both clueless. Gravy is for meat and poultry, sauce is for pasta.

OK Dave, tell me this then...how come they use cranberry 'sauce' for a turkey dinner?
Gotcha, LOL!!!!

Cranberry sauce is a side dish John, not something you put on turkey. Actually, cranberry sauce is more like cranberry flavored jello from a can.

Cranberry sauce is a nice garnish to use after you ladle
gravy
over the Turkey meat.
I grew up in Brooklyn -- that's about as 'Guinea' as you can get -- and
gravy
was put over Roast Beef, Turkey, and mashed potatoes.
Sauce is what was simmered on the stove all morning so it would be just right for Sunday dinner. Add to the sauce the sausages, meatballs, and rolled pigskin my Pop used to make up, and you had "Heaven in the Kitchen!"
And we never put sauce over "pasta" ... that's such a neo-dumb word I can't stand it! No! We put sauce on our
macaroni
! And fresh Ravioli, layers of Lasagna, and of course we dipped the slices of Italian bread into the pot of sauce ... and it
really
pissed off my mother! Of course ...
everything
pissed that woman off! Ha!
"Oooooohhhh! Sal-ute!"
John.

My step mother was italian and we grew up calling it sauce, and macaroni. Sauce was every Sunday and Wednesday. Tripe was...too often, yech! Later I married into an italian family. Bread was dipped in oil and garlic or in the sauce. They drank wine, we drank pop. The best part of New Years dinner was the calamari and also lamb. We always said sauce, but I have heard the term gravy more nowadays. I started off in Buffalo, the "other" Poland, and then Rochester, little italy. Mangia!

Hell, I'm being generic, pasta covers everything without having to list it all. Linguini, zit, rigatoni, angel hair, spaghettin, and even cavitelli which for some reason pronounced gavadille.
