I plan to build an electric  tumbler and was wondering at what speed it should turn (rpm)? After a search I see from 3-30 rpms Want to use a 1725 motor  . What size pulley do I need to slow er down?

I bought a 65:1 gear reducer this afternoon for $20 . I want to use this for the tumbler.   Which do a better job the type that the barrel rolls on 4 tires or the type the motor turns the barrel?

As long as you get your drum speed at the RPM you need, either way will work. With the 65:1 reducer you will be turning the reducer output at 26.5 RPM if you drive it direct off the motor, so if you run a pulley between the motor and reducer you can go 2:1 and turn at 13.2 RPM.....Go 3:1 and get 8.8 RPM on the output. Does this help?

The reducer has a 5" pulley on input and a 25 tooth sprocket on the output. So If I go with 2.5" pulley on the motor through a belt to the reducer. = 1725 x 2.5=4312.5 divid  by 5 (for the 5" pulley)= 862.5 / 75:1 ratio ===== 11.5 RPM.  How is that for a speed .
What rpm does a dryer operate at?

11.5 is a good speed. but  you now show 75:1. 65:1 would give us 13.27, which is still OK.

Hap I like your idea of pulley off the motor and will be the route I go . Thanks. BTW my dryer spins at 47 RPMs. Others are using a dryer to tumble their hides. I think thats a bit fast.  I want to remove moisture from hides prior to shaving.

Well after building the cradle style I decided to rebuild and mount under a work bench.
Basically 2x6 with pillow block bearings install on the ends.
These are attached from the top of work bench .

Drive unit is a 1725 RPM to a 2.5 " pulley to a 5.5 pulley through a 75:1 ratio gear reduction to a coupler to spin the barrel at 12 rpm.

Or you can go really cheap, same setup, but put a hamster wheel on the end.
