I'm taking in a great horned owl for a nature center here in CT and I kinda have a price in my head and was wondering what someone with experience doing them would charge.  Just want to see if i'm way off base.  Thanks for any help.  Ryan

Back when they were legal(pre 1972) I used to easily knock out two a day.  They have very tough skins and are much easier to do than a pheasant.  I got $35 each for them back then.

GHOs have to be the easiest bird to mount, because of their tough skin and huge amount of feathers. That was "good" money in those days, you could get a deer head mounted for that back then. The owls kept me in spending money through college. Minimum wage was less than $2 an hour and the job I worked allowed me to hang the owls in the shop and sell them off the wall. The last one I did I charged $300 and that's been a few years.  The guy showed up with all the paperwork and I shot him a price, because I was busy, I upped it a bit and he didn't bat an eye. When the law changed in 1972, I probably had a dozen in the freezer to mount, I just chucked them in the garbage. Hey, you couldn't sell them any more, what good were they!

yeah, these laws are kind of a shame in a way.  I get several calls a year from people who find hawks and owls and such on the raod dead and want a nice piece for their office or whatever.  It's a shame that nothing can be done.  I like that old atricle in breakthrough with the pics of george lesser's shop in new york with those scores of owls and other raptors.  Man that would be cool...
