o.O I'm a beginner and I am planning on a rattlesnake mount to be my first actual mount. I've had great success with skull mounts and skeletal mounts, even did an entire rattlesnake skeleton, so I thought it was time to try my hand at something new... This has all been extremely helpful to me, and I can't wait to finish my mount and ask for your opinions on my work. :-)

Good luck on your snake mount.  One of these days I'll have to give it a shot myself.  For now, can't stand the little buggers.

One thing I learned a few weeks ago is you should be VERY careful when your skinning the head. I have been poked by the fangs a bunch of times and it was no biggy. The last one I did I was skinning along and one of the fangs went straight into the tip of my index finger. It just felt like a splinter for a minute or so, but then it felt like it just fell asleep on me. Then it went totally numb and it swelled a little.
Later that day it started feeling like I hit it with a hammer. It's fine now, but I learned a good lesson that day.
For now on I'm going to pull the fangs before I skin them and I might even jam a small piece of foam in the mouth to cover any that I may have missed.

I've made some pretty stupid mistakes doing taxidermy. I've cut myself pretty good, I've driven wires in my hand, I've driven drill bits in my hand and on and on. But this was the first time I got a little nervous. lol
