I'm in the middle of salting a BIG hide and ran OUT of salt Shocked I've got a friend that owns a restaurant and get's me 25 lb. bags of non-iodized salt Grin so we called him and told him I needed some salt.He said that it would come in Friday(yesterday)  Grin so we went up there to pick it up and the supply place didn't have ANY  Angry so it will be NEXT Wendsday before he'll get it in for me and I NEEDED it LAST NIGHT Cry So I went on a TWO HOUR wild goose chase to find alot of salt last night.We ended up having to buy alot of 1lbs from the grocery store Roll Eyes just curious to where some of you get's your salt and how big of bags Grin

What type of salt are you guys buying from your feed store? Ill my feed store has is trace (mineral salt ) and some sheep salt..
  Smart and Final now changed to Cash and Carry carry a salt that works nice..

I buy salt at the local Food Lion grocery.  They have bakers salt (super fine grade) in 25# bags for about $4 I think  Best stuff I've ever used.  Coverage is exceptional.

Some feed stores call it mixing salt. Some brands are not as fine as others. I find that the finer the better. Morton salt makes the best for salting capes and SM game. If you are just salting flat skins a feed salt works. The feed stores here sell #50 and #80. # for # the #50 are cheaper so check the prices. You don't need to get a whole pallet of salt unless you are salting 1,000s of capes/hides. One #50 bag will do about 15-25 w-t capes, if you do your salting so you can reuse the excess salt.

Mine is Fine mixing Salt, Under the American Stockman brand.    Also called "Fine Hay Salt"

I can't find food grade salt here like you are talking about.  25# of fine salt would probably do what 50# of coarse livestock salt would do...correct?
