There are other ways to achieve this type of end result. But this shows the basic scale painting technique that I use for all salmonids that helps the task not to be so overwhelming. I wanted this to focus only on scale painting and tried to break the process down, easy to see and understand. Liquid Scales is the key product that really makes these efforts come to life, as you can clearly see.
If you wanted to continue painting beyond what I have shown here you can mist, tip or hand paint another color on top of any scales you want to highlight. And you can most certainly spend more time painting the face of you fish, especially by using a Still Life fish eye lens!
I used a #3 round tip paint brush with full strength Liquid scales, except tipping on back (thinned with a drop or two of water) and of course Ultimate retarder.
PS There isnt any crinkling going on, maybe the dried scales of the skin mount when looking at the micro shots?
Hope this is helpful,
Jeff
OK I will give you that, but is that your initials I see on the side?
