I have a set of reproduction dall sheep horns that I would like to paint.  I was wondering what type of paint I should use?  I have heard that staining is not the way to go!  Also, any suggestions on how to get started?  Thanks!

I have a couple sets I've bought that were "stained" or colored with woodfiller. One a 46 inch Bighorn and the other a 45 inch Dall set. Stain is definitely not the way to go. If I were you, I'd consider some of the great new fish "finger" paints available from McKenzie, Rhinehardt or WASCO taxidermy suppliers. They offer a lot of workability to allow you to get a good solid golden base and then add touches of darker color here and there to create unique, realistic horn color. By all means work with MANY good quality photos for references. One of the reasons I love wildlife and hunting magazines are the great photos. Good luck.
