So I got a call today from a guy who manages a bison ranch.  He says he has a few heads that he want's done "in a few days", and he wants to pay $40 each.  Pretty much what I charge to do a bobcat.  He was actually irritated when I told him $150 and figure on about 4 months.  Is it just me, or are his expectations just a little bit off?

On the plus side I did find out where I could pick up a few for probably cheap.

I have never done any horned animals, let alone something the size of a bison. I charge $125 for hogs, that's the biggest I have received so far down here in the south. $150 sounds mild if you ask me, I tell my customers that when the grease is out, its a matter of a couple of days til its done.

He's freaking nuts if he thinks someone is gonna do a buffalo for $40...

As for 4 days... I think the beetles can't even get one meat free in that time let alone get it degreased and whitened in 4 days. Even if ya simmer it...

It was a very bad hunting season locally last year. Some blamed it on the wolves....
Incoming via UPS & FED-X was mainly antelope and bears but was the first spring that beetle food was dwindling at the pace my colony consumes. I did clean a LOT of Bison last year and currently have my largest freezer full to fill in the gaps in finances later. I charge 100.00 each if in multiples or singles for 135.00. That few thousand bucks came in handy last year and my colony and I ate well Grin

I got a buddy I'm going to do a buffalo skull for free, and by free I mean about 40 bucks lol.  That'll cover the cost alone.  I better tell him it'll take longer than 4 days Cheesy

Kinda amazing that people have no idea what work is actually involved in skull cleaning.

All day long and would be a happier man for it! Most the work on a Bison is prep. Those that have done a few know what I mean.

i wouldn't touch a buffalo skull for $40.  Not a chance in hell.

You can feed beetles freezer burned meat all day long.  I have been fedding them scraps from deer processing last year.  They haven't missed a bit!

OK....assuming it is your first Bison to prep....1 hour to skin, remove lower jaw and flush brains. Double bag and place in a hot spot to remove sheaths, take out of bags in 48 hours and hose with hot water, dry and into beetles or freeze first depending on your environment. Let the beetles do their thing and IF your colony is large enough to handle a bison remove it in 48 hours and hose or soak with HOT water.     DONE....cash, check or charge sir?? Wink

$40.00 sounds good to me....

How much do you make an hour at your day job??  Grin

Sounded more like he wanted a nice clean skull in 4 days. Not one that still needed work. Could be wrong though. I don't have that many beetles, I would have to use a 55 gallon drum or stock tank and simmer them clean if he wanted them in 4 days. Still, that's far cry from a nicely whitened and degreased skull
