I wonder how many rare birds are hiding away in museums throughout the world, in need of restoration. ? I can remember going behind the scenes at our "local" natural history museum many many years ago,( I took a little auk in for them) .They had draw upon draw full of specimen skins, and lots of mounted birds/animals just collecting dust, never to be seen by the public.

Nancy I know what you mean about cutting those birds with hedge trimmers.
I am working on 2 NZ Stichbirds and 3 Kaka at the moment , all have been autopsied and the little stichbirds are cut from the anus to the bottom of the breastbone and then out bothsides through the ribs to the wing socket  Huh Huh Roll Eyes the kaka have been cut from the anus to the back of the head, one has been cut around the head so the brain could be removed Shocked Shocked. I have managed to skin them out but not looking forward to trying to sew them back to gether.
I also have a Kokako, Tui, Kakariki, woodpidgen and Rifleman (smallest bird in NZ) for the same client, the Kokako was caught accidentaly in a trap it has lots of head damage and will take a lot of work to fix
Taxos , good luck with your Tui, i think I mentioned to you once before I have dozens of them around my house, and its not uncommon to find dead ones on the lawn.
I would love to post pics of these birds on here but try as I might it just dont seem to work here although I have no probs on other forums

very cool birds - its interesting all those paradise birds you only see super old mounts of - never any recent - really really well done peices - I wonder why that is.  Wish museums would spend more in upgrading their collections - I went to a college that had a HUGE collection behind closed doors just collecting dust - a terrible shame and a crime to keep it hidden away.

I had the very lucky opportunity to work on a few birds of paradise recently (including a king bird of paradise) and a beautiful little pitta  stunning creatures

A couple of years ago I went on a pelagic trip to the Island of Eldey. Because the weather conditions were great, we could acces the rock to ring some of the seabirds nesting there. We saw a huge amount of gulls species, and also two great northern divers close to the rock.

Just before we left, we found this weird looking guillemot egg, it is larger than a normal guillemot egg and therefor quite rare...it was collected with the right permits.

here it is:
