Thanks Bucknut for finding this one.
While in Namibia a couple years ago there were several Kudu, Gemsbok and Zebra that were seen and taken that had hooves like that. They said it was due to all the sand and no hard ground being we were hunting the edge of the Kalahari Desert.

What you are looking at there is an advanced case of laminitis.

I have also seen that on kudu and zebra in the Kalahari, the reason was told to me exactly like Dennis said, no hard ground to wear them down. My dad and I both targeted stallions that had those type of feet. That was not easy in tall grass but the PH picked them out by the way they kicked up dust, (at least that is what he said). My dad kept the hooves from his they had completely made a full circle back on themselves. He made a lamp out of them. The kudu I saw was one we found dead and his feet were that way. The zebra seemed to run just as fast as the rest and didn't have any problems keeping up with the herd. I have seen one dork deer in the hundreds of blacktails we have killed, I shoud try and find its picture, seemed like I remember body wise being about 3 1/2 yr old but was only a big thick spike.

You see it a lot in ponies but I never knew deer could get it. Mom has an old Welch pony that was my sister's when she was growing up. She really has to watch her weight and keep her trimmed are she'd get that way, she has a mild case of it.
