Most of the front of the cape is there....I still think it could be saved. Like I said earlier, it won't be completely right, but would be better than a short old neck just stuck on the wall

I considered asking him if he had the rest of the hide... But its cut way too far forward to sew anything back on or even try to use it on a shoulder mount. He will be getting a replacement cape.   It was the first deer they had ever gotten.  No one had ever caped an animal....  I'd rather sew up a cape all the way up the front of the neck than have someone bring something like this in...

Neck mount = Price of a shoulder mount + $150  OR    New cape $100   Let him do the math.  There AIN'T no way to do it right the way it is, but that's up to him!

I dont do neck mounts because to me, I wont look good. I want no part of it. I did, however, get talked into sewing the remaining cape back to a short cut one once. It really wasnt too bad, although the customer payed dearly. He actually offered the extra, so I felt it was worth trying. Id prefer not to again though.

No neck mounts here! Lol. Beautiful cape though, wish I had a blacktail that nice!

I'm thinking about 4" cut off the back of a shoulder mount would do it.
But if he is going to pay for a replacement cape, then I'd go that route.

I had a heavy 6X5 whitetail come in the same way last week,,,
but wait,,
it gets worse,,
he told me he had it skinned up to the ears,
took it home and decided he wasn't going to shoulder mount,
he was going to euro instead so,,,,,
YUP!!!!
YOU GUESSED IT,,,
Cut all the cape off up to the ears, threw it in the garbage can and brought the head in for a European mount.......

Wanted to punch him right in the nose.....

So do a neck mount for him, and charge him the same as a shoulder mount.

ditto, what's the difference?I don't refuse to do anything.I price it to make money and do it if they pay.

I've had one deer like that, one elk and one bighorn ram show up in the shop like that in the last week. Makes me want to cry. I even have a brochure out showing how much cape I want. I tell them if they have any doubts, keep the Azz attached.

Well I got in ANOTHER short cape... AND it wasnt vaidated so he has to take it in to have the tag signed off.. .

I still wonder HOW people can look at an entire body of a deer as it lays there at their feet... and think that cutting too much cape is the wrong thing to do..oh they dont need the arm pits, and that brisket.. psst no need for that right?? . Hello... They have the ENTIRE deer to work with......  I keep telling people bring the whole dang thing in if you want... cut it  right in front of the tail for all I care.. just make sure you bring in enough skin for me to work with .. I can cut off what I dont need but Im not a magician.. I cant make skin appear where there is none.. Sad

Lets see that makes 2 antelope, and 3 or maybe its 4 deer that have short capes.

Im seriously thinking of holding a seminar for my local hunters to show them WHERE to cut the cape... Like 2 weeks or so before season my an add in the paper that says FREE CAPING SEMINAR ... MAYBE then these guys will learn how to leave enough skiin to work with.....

OKay done venting while I still have some hair left on my head...

I refuse to do them because my name goes on the only things. The ONLY one I did years ago, I did charge the same, but it looked so bad I refuse to do anymore. Either a new cape, skull/antler mount or nothing.

I don't do neck mounts either, thankfully, I don't get alot of them in cut that short. Took in 5-6 wts the other day and 3 of them were cut short in the legs/brisket. One guy I have mounted 4 wts for and none of them were cut short! Bad thing was this one was 24" behind the ears, I will be altering the form for it. No matter how much you try and teach some, they will never learn. I guess they just like paying the charges!

I dont care if its necks, or anything else. If I dont think I could make it look 100%, Im not taking it in. Its ME who runs my business. Let the competition do the chopped up ones. You know darn well the customer will say YOU mounted it that way, not that he brought it in cut short.
