Do some of you not get that EVERY PIECE OF TAXIDERMY that comes out of your studio is YOUR ADVERTISEMENT?! Sorry gab, but even you surprise me LOL
Seriously, $400-$500 is not worth doing an "ugly ass neck mount" for! When this guy starts getting ribbed by his friends for that "ugly ass neck mount" who do you think he will blame...himself??? HELL NO! He's gonna blame the Taxidermist for everything he can. He may even say that they are the ones that cut it too short, but for sure he will blame you for talking him ino spending money on an "ugly ass neck mount"
Here's what I reccomend, take it for what it's worth. There are four options
A) Sell him an extra cape & make MORE money
B) Sell him a cape at cost to help your business look like it's putting out professional mounts
C) If you have an extra cape you were given, offer it to him for free
D) Tell him to take it somewhere else to have an "ugly ass neck mount" done & refuse it.
I have done all four & they are all the best options over letting an "ugly ass neck mount" leave your studio with your name on it.

He Bought and paid for a replacement cape before he even walked out of the shop! I saved this one just for giggles... I'm gonna put it on the form just to see how short he cut it... It'll make a good parts or craft cape...
I'm with Michael...
I offered him "B" Since it was his first deer and He did at least try...
But Definately A, B, C or D.... I will NOT do a neck mount in my shop. They are not offered, not shown, and not on the price list.
His mount will cost him just shy of $650 with his replacement cape. Not nearly enough for me to do a neck mount...
It would have to be extreme circumstances (death, illness etc) or an historical recreation before I would consider a neck mount.

I dont care if its necks, or anything else. If I dont think I could make it look 100%, Im not taking it in. Its ME who runs my business. Let the competition do the chopped up ones. You know darn well the customer will say YOU mounted it that way, not that he brought it in cut short.
My thoughts too Bill. It's not all about money!!

I got one in today thats just the opposite... Like Todd at Sawtooth said... Its cut ALL the way down the back... to the tail- Which is still attached... a no footed cape... First one like that I've got... But I like Todd's saying... "When in Doubt... Leave the Azz attached!"

For the last two years I had a customer bring me in his son's deer for a SHOULDER mount and when I opened the bag up the head was cut off right behind the jaw! Now this happened two years in a row. I never said a work just found two capes and mounted them up and charged him a little extra. He never said a word about anything. I wonder if he thinks I am a magician or something! Or he thinks I can flat get stretch out of a cape! He has more money then sense! Oh, well, to each his own!

I get a couple each year... "Oh so and so knows how and did the skinning for me..." And yep... its all screwed up!
