I am doing my first collection of African? I have capes of kudu, waterbuck, wildebeest and lifesize of a jackal and Nyala. My question is Wet tan or Dry tan? With it be a fibrous skin , I am thinking it would be best to get wet tans or not? Next, what tannery do you prefer for African skins and why?

Thank you,
John Dimpfl / Vermont Valley Taxidermy

Carolina Fur Dressing.  Wet tan.

X2 for east of the Mississippi, Golden State for west.  Both tans strech.  And get wet tan.

I feel I get better "workability" out of a wet tanned African cape that even the best dry tan. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I have all my African stuff wet tanned for mounting.

Ditto Jason's response, Golden state tannery is probably the best in African wet tans.
In my opinion a wet tan is the better way to go on the African stuff, plenty of stretch and you don't have to worry about the hard to rehydrate eyes and noses.
A quick wash once you are ready to mount and your good to go.

Best I have seen is the wildlife gallery.  It is a dry tan but when soaked up is as soft and supple as you could want it to be.  Have not tried the other tanneries mentioned but if others suggest them I am sure they would be good as well.  I just got back a LS impala and LS kudu from them and they will mount up like a dream, good stretch, nice and soft, which is huge when it comes to adjusting your skin.  Good luck with your first safari
