WWW
« on: November 01, 2009, 03:31:34 PM »

Have a guy bringing in a bear that says there is pine sap all over the hair from head to butt.. Seems this bear rubbed all over a sappy tree..

Did a search and cant find any topics on removing this crap from the fur..

Its to be a rug and I havent seen it yet but his wife says it is covered head to toe with it rather well.

Rae,
Denatured alcohol should do the trick. My father in law used it to remove pine sap off of windshields when he was a car dealer

If that doesm't do it for you, try spraying and then gently combing a little bit of WD40 through the hair.

I've used acetone to take it out.I would imagine other solvent would work too.Just don't forget you are using flammable liquids and use proper precautions. Not a bad idea to do it outside if it is a big job.A shot of acetone and a brush and it comes right out.

A safer and easier way to remove that would be to use mayonnaise.  Just blop it on and work it into the hair like shampoo, and rinse it out.  Since you've already got to deal with a greasy bear, having some on the hair side shouldn't hurt and will come out with degreasing.  Mayo melts sap instantly.  It won't interfere with the tanning either.

Another option would be a product called "Remove" it is in the medical field, and is specifically made for removing tape residue off of skin.  It also works really well on pine pitch, they come in little wipes.

My kids use to play in sap puddles around the bottom of the trees.  The best thing in the world for sap is jelled baby oil.  You can get it anywere.
