just bought a largemouth bass replica. what do i need to do prepare the replica for paint? anything special or paint it just like a skin mount seal it as normal then paint or do i primer it then paint? remember its my first replica thanks.

the first thing you need to do is grind your seems if there are any and do the moth detail. then you can coat the whole fish with a medium coat of black or very dark brown and use steel wool to buiff it back off. this will give you the scale detail and you can go on painting as usual from there.

You might also want to clean the mold release from the fish before doing any painting and prior to doing the antiquing to bring out the scales you may want to prime the blank so that subsequent paints will adhere.......seems that some do and others don't do this but you may wish to do some more research on this topic prior to painting the blank. First question would be where'd you get it from? Knowing that will tell us at what stage it is prepared and you may or may not have to do much (OR, you may not have to do ANYTHING OR, you may have to do a heck of a LOT - loL!) All depends on who the blank is from...
