I am hoping to get something cleared up...this is for all the taxidermists out there...I have been looking at different pedestal mounts (regular and wall) for the buck I shot this fall. Here are a couple pics of the buck for visual reference.

In researching mounts I have found that there are many different styles of molds in terms of artists (Matt Thompson, Dennis Behn, Joe Meder, etc.) who designed them but what I cant figure out is if they are making these molds for specific regions of the country or are they just very general (made to fit any deer). The reason I'm asking is because if this is the case (that they gear molds towards whitetails in specific areas) then I would like to look into who is making them for a midwest look - I dont want the buck to look like one of those skinny necked texas deer (nothing against texas deer) when I shot it in the midwest.  Could anyone give me a suggestion on who makes an excellent forum for midwest region deer?

Thanks for any help or suggestions

Mental toughness is many things. It is humility because it behooves all of us to remember that simplicity is the sign of greatness and meekness is the sign of true strength. Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love.

The form is just a starting point for the mount. The finished piece will be not be any better on one form or another. Find yourself a good taxidermist, its what he or she does that will make or break a mount, not the form. Great deer by the way!  Wink

There are different size frame deer, some large some small and some in between. Some sculptors base their forms on a certain frame size. Most Taxidermist will know from experience what sculptor and form to use for a deer from a particular region. A Canadian deer will be different from a Texas deer and so on. Looking at your deer I would recommend a Coombs form.

Dont be a pain in the arse & let your taxidermist decide. You couldnt get a deer mounted here if you thought for a second you were going to dictate brands.

Why don't you stick to WHAT you want instead of what you want IN IT.  Pick a pose, whether it's an available pose or something unique that isn't offered anywhere.  If your taxidermist really is a good one he'll make it how you want it.  The forms are a starting point, it's what we do with them that makes the difference.  I've never had a customer tell me what form to buy, only the pose he'd like to have.  I'll buy the appropriate form and alter if I have to to make it what he/she wants.  This is what you pay your taxidermist to do, so just sit back and relax and let him do his job.  The research for forms is his, the research for pose is yours.

BTW, nice buck.

Little Texas deer. Two weeks ago my cousin killed a 177" twelve point that dressed 240lbs. in North Texas just outside of Vernon Texas. His son killed a 154" ten that dress 225lbs. What's up. Sick of hearing it.

If you have a talented artist, I am sure the mount will be nice whatever the form. Congrats on a beautiful animal!
