"Mounting your Memories"

« on: November 16, 2009, 09:21:06 PM »

Having a problem keeping the humidity up in my chest freezer.  My beetles are not eating all of the meat before it dries up too quickly.  They eat the majority (90%) before it gets too dry.  The humidity is only 20% in my box with NO fan running.

I have re-hydrated(full prepped head) for 3 days...and they are not cleaning an antelope (havent ran any deer through yet) quick enough...so I have to rehydrate and re-introduce.

I thought about placing a bowl of water in there....would this work?  The temp is 80-83 all times.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with another hobby.  A bowl of water couldn't hurt (put a rag or something in to give your beetles something to climb out on), but one cheap way I found to bump up humidity was to put an aquarium bubbler with a bubble rock in a container of water (the taller the container the better, gives the bubbles more chance to pick up moisture).  I used this to keep humidity close to 100% in an aquarium, I'm sure it would work here too.

One advantage to having buckets full of rotting skulls laying around is that decorating for Halloween is easy...

Josh, have you tried feeding your skulls not as dry to begin with? Wish I had 20%. Peak summer humidy I had was 27% with a grizzly kill moose. It was partially eaten, ripe and too nasty to prep. I froze it for a week then fed it whole. It took my beetles a week to clean, hair and all. I regulate my humidity in my dry climate by covering my box and regulating the opening like a wood stove damper. Too much moisture and I remove the cover. It never stays damp but a few hours.

bulldog...you could move to Mississippi where the frikkin' humidity is 85 or higher most of the time, LOL....or, you might buy a humidifier...you may have to put a timer on it so it will cycle on and off...too much humidity is worse than not enough in a dermestarium.

Joey i am afraid of too much.  That is what I am fearing.  I thought of a humidifier....but thought there would be something easier.

What about a cool air humidifier? They are sold in WalMart in the pharmacy with the vaporizers.

This summer the humidity was high so I dried the skulls befor I put them in now that the humidity is lower I am putting them in frozen on a plastic lid and they are eating all of a deer skull in 2 days it is also keeping the humidity from 35 to 45% in the tank

yea luke that is what I used to do.  But you go from freezing temps to 85 degree bug box..the teeth will eventually crack.  But I have thought about that.

I went back and re-read where you had already thought of that. Sorry, I'm not multi-tasking well tonight, LOL.
