I'm BACK.......

WWW
« on: November 11, 2009, 05:02:35 PM »

Ok, I never worry much about salting skins, I usually flesh and use my auto-tanner. But these two buffalo I got in are way to big for me, so off to the tannery for these big brutes.

I salted out the two skins and cape folded them up and placed them in an open container. My dad asked a logical question,... how will they dry when folded up....?

Um,.. am I doing something bad by folding up these skins? How should I handle these big skins? Or is folded up ok. I solted the big skins on Monday night, and just finished fleshing and turning the cape. Do I need to go lay the big skins out flat? I am starting to think about it too much and panic that I am ruining these buffalo..... Help!! Undecided Huh

I just did a moose back hide like that GK. I let it dry a little and a few days later folded it. Waited a few days more and folded it and on and on.

you need to hang it so it can drip all the moisture out and let it start drying then before it dries hard fold it up

I would let the air get to them so they can dry. If they are in a box the air wont get to them.

make sure you hang it if you leave it on the concrete it will draw moisture

Flesh, salt let it drain for a few days then fold them up and let them dry , as long as you let the fluids drain off they will be ok to fold do that all the time!

For stuff that  big I lay them on my salt table (which is a tilted expanded metal table for air flow)  for 24 hours later, shake off old salt, apply new..Depending on how the salt looks I may shake off and reapply a third time...  wait til the skin is starting to dry out but before they get crunchy, then fold it up.. Then let dry the rest of the way.

Having a fan blowing on it helps alot..

after two days of salting shake access salt off and fold it up as small as possible so it wont take up too much space when u ship it. ive had elk ,bears, deer etc sit in the salting bin for 10- 12 months before sending off and they are just fine.
