i am new and have searched the archives but didn't find my answer. i am wanting to try to mount a deer shoulder mount myself. i bought a dry tanned mule deer cape off eBay and got it for $10. its a nice looking cape that was said to have a 19" neck. it only measures 11" right now. will i get that much stretch out of it when i rehydrate it? the face is shrunk up alot also. thanks

It may stretch, but it won't stretch that much!
Maybe 17/18.

Like said rehydrate and see if it stretches.. then apply soda water on it on the flesh side.

3 tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of water and dissolve.. wet the inside of the cape and see if it will let out. apply again,, you will see if it relaxes enough.. Most capes are pulled long when the shaver does their work...

Pull it for width all the way.

John,
I have never tried the baking soda but have known about it for a few years. I was told that it works wonders for getting extra stretch but that you had better hurry completing the mount as it will also cause hair to become loose and fall out. Have you noticed this or is it more an amount used that can cause this?

I have not had that problem but I think it could happen,, just go slow when appling the  baking soda.. I aplly it with a wet rag and then in 10 minutes stretch the hide, if I thin k it will go somemore, wait another 10 minutes and if the hide is still stiff and not relaxing apply it again and repeat.

If you over neutralize sure you can loose a hide I am sure,, but I have never had that problem.

I would take ALOT of baking soda to make the hair fall out... that is what you neautralize KT in and it's only suppose to be for 20 min but I screwed up and got side tracked one time and left it in for over 2 hrs.......... mounted up just fine  LOL

I think what John is referring to is Arm & Hammer washing soda, it does leach some of the tan out and will give you a lot of stretch but be careful with it to much can ruin the cape.

The washing soda trick will help get a "little" more stretch, but I would recommend using it only as a last resort.

That's a good point Old fart.  Like I said it leaches the tan out of the cape so essentially your dealing with a close to raw cape if you over do it.
