This is going to be my first attempt at mounting a whitetail deer. I was lucky enough to have a member here donate a starter cape but I am having trouble getting the correct eye to nose measurment.

I found in my van dykes book how to measure a cape that has been tanned, so I can get the B and C measurments, but when i lay the head out and try to "fill" the nose up where I believe it should be, I am back and forth between 6 1/4 and 6 1/2.

If i choose a form based on a 6 1/2 eye to nose, and my cape is actually 6 1/4 can i get away with a 1/4 inch difference?

This is what I do....you can always taxi the extra skin into place if you go with 6 1/4 and its really 6 1/2. but if it is really 6 1/4 and you go with the 6 1/2 then you will be making more pull on the skin as it is drying which will lead to haveing to babysitting it a whole lot more...JMO by no means am I a PRO

Alright I figured that would be the correct logic, but I really wanted to try the EDGE form. They don't make anything smaller then 6 1/2. The reason I wanted to try that form, is because I think for me it has alot of beginner friendly features.

Can anyone offer any ideas on a nice maker of forms for a beginner to try out?

1/4 inch is no big deal, larger or smaller, IMO

Ditto on what CNB said, I never go bigger on the eye to nose, remember, everything is going to be bigger, not just the eye to nose but the entire head. I always try and go a touch small on the eye to nose, it makes for a better fit, but that's just my experience.

dont worry over 1/4 inch go the shorter nose and you will be fine...

I have not measured eye to nose on deer now in five or six years.. thats the most irrelevent measurement you will find. the swell of the neck is all I care about. get that right and the others will be fine.
