Hi, nice looking mount but looks like a Mink to me. Face markings are wrong for a Polecat....

Have you ever seen a European Polecat?  For that matter, have you ever seen a Mink?
Polecat

Mink

No resemblance.  Mink, while "related" are different in appearance from Ferret and Polecat, in that the mink has a shorter muzzle, and wider head.

Now a Ferret?

Yeah ... very similar if not the same! Wink

Lord rusty, UK mink can come in many colours and patterns. All wild mink in the UK originated from captive bred stock and come in loads of guises. From silvers to chocolates and blacks, and loads in between, with various amounts of white.  I have shot mink that looked like Henks young polecat. As for ferrets, most that look like polecats originate from polecat crosses , much like the one in your photo, but I have seen some in the UK that look remarkably like "pure" polecats.

I could be mistaken, but if I recall correctly, Ferrets and Polecats are essentially the same animal ... the Ferret being the "domesticated" version.

All in all, Mink have a face and head very distinctive from the Polecat and Ferret.  Shorter muzzle with smaller nose, and a wider head overall.  When viewed from above the Minks' head is a very "squat" triangular shape.  The colors of the animal is useless to me ... I look at the structure.  And that, more than anything else, is what makes my determination as to which is which. Wink

Have you ever seen a European Polecat?  For that matter, have you ever seen a Mink?    "Yes to both - I have kept and worked polecats for approx 30 years. Shot dozens of Mink in my career as a gamekeeper.  Mink in the UK come in lots of colours and markings.  Most of our Polecats are lighter phase than the one in the picture (which is a beauty by the way) and they have been crossed with the ferret large scale..."
