I'm surprised no one mentioned using clay balls applied to the eyes. I use the lacquer eye protector liquid. I also paint over and clean with q-tips. All these ways work.

I just clean them off with a little acetone on a Q-tip. As anal as it may sound, use the Qtip brand as they are wound tighter and have it just damp with no excess acetone. Once you have a drip roll down the side of the head and ruin your hard work, you will appreciate why.
Amen!!! Don't try to save 50 cents with the cheap brands...It ain't worth it.
First...don't let paint pile on the eye....try to keep it at just overspray.
Second...clean the bulk of it with the Q-tip and thinner/acetone
Third...fine tune it with a small square tipped artisit brush slightly dampened with thinner/acetone.
Finally use a clean, dry Q-tip to polish the eye prior to glossing.
X2 with what Lone Wolf does, minus the polishing step. Also FYI, I hold the fish sideways so that if any excess acetone does run it goes into the socket and not down the fish's cheek. And, blow on it if you do get too much - acetone evaporates very quickly.
I also don't like any coverings. Cleaning off with acetone is much easier IMO and a cleaner finish. Especially on replicas, there always seems to be a little white showing thru when peeling off any cover. And yes, use Modage Podge or something cheap if you choose to use a cover. The Bowens fish eye cover is expensive junk...

I have gone a step further this year Dan and began installing 3 on my mounts. Just thinking outside the box.

Modge podge! Put few coats of this on the eye and let it dry. Just paint right over the eye and when done, just peel off and you ready to go.
