I just clean them off with a little acetone on a Q-tip. As anal as it may sound, use the Qtip brand as they are wound tighter and have it just damp with no excess acetone. Once you have a drip roll down the side of the head and ruin your hard work, you will appreciate why.
Amen!!! Don't try to save 50 cents with the cheap brands...It ain't worth it. First...don't let paint pile on the eye....try to keep it at just overspray. Second...clean the bulk of it with the Q-tip and thinner/acetone Third...fine tune it with a small square tipped artisit brush slightly dampened with thinner/acetone. Finally use a clean, dry Q-tip to polish the eye prior to glossing.
