Hello all,
I just joined the room yesterday. I am going to give taxidermy a shot and see if I have the paitience to do it. I'm sure I will have questions from time to time but my frst one is this. What should I expect from my first try? How did your very first mount come out? While I'm at it, let me go ahead and ask this one. I plan on using Krowtann. What size container do you put the hide in when using that?

First try you should expect frustration. As for Krowtan read the archives. Any question that could be asked has been asked at least 6 dozen times. Have fun.

First mounts are learning experiments, and will be your worst mount. Best not to ruin your trophy on the first try. I have a rack I will be remounting for the third time, as the first two times were when I was still learning, and I cant stand to look at it now that I learned a little bit.

My first mount looked like road kill, but after all the work I had put into it I was happy. With every short fall comes experince and a drive to not have the same problem in the next mount. IMO

Hi, I am fairly new at taxidermy too.   The people on here are a wonderful source of advice, they have helped me multiple times, too many to count.  But, before you post a question, search the archives, I know its a pain sometimes, but most often, you can find the info you are looking for there.  I use krowtan...some people use a 5 gallon bucket, I prefer a large plastic trash can, with a lid....but its a matter of preference!  Welcome to the forums....its a priceless tool, and good luck with your 1st mount....look at tons of reference!!!

I also use Krowtann in a 5 gallon bucket it works great on average sized capes.  You get a large cape and it is a really tight fit.  I have now started using a mop bucket with wheels.  This is priceless.

Thanks for the replies. They were what I was hoping to hear. I have ordered a couple of videos that I plan to watch several times before trying anything and also have asked a local taxidermists what he would charge to get me started. My initial thoughts are that I dont plan on this being some big business. I am thinking I would just like to be able to do my own mounts and maybe 30 - 40 heads a year once I am good enough to do someone elses trophy.

30-40 heads a year?  Thats going to eat up 30 or 40 of your 52 weekends, what will you call that if not big business?
