Yes exactly, it was stored in a basement for years..   I hate to see a historic rug as such go in the dumpster and am curious if it could be salvaged.

Ouch.

I don't think the wizard of Oz can save that lion.

The short answer is "NO". Now I'm sure that you could take the hide and with careful sewing and some artificial/replacement skin get it back into the shape of a lion, but it would never be "ruggable'. It's obvious the hide is rotted to the point of fragility and would crack and shatter with every movement.  You can't undo what's been done over the years.  Sorry.

if the head is still intact, save that.  But the body?Huh, bottom of the guinea pig cage. ah, maybe not, probably just soak up the pee and stink.

Sorry for the loss, a incredible animal to lose.

Thanks guys for the input!  It is a shame to see it in such bad condition but sometimes grandpas old lion rug means nothing to the grandchildren and they rot away!!

Thanks again,
Jason

"IF" you have ALL the pieces..........it could possibly be laminated to a piece of fabric(my choice would be denim) with a product called Tear Mender. It would be an expensive fix, but it can be done......It AIN'T going to be cheap! If you are willing to spend the money, PM me and I will put you in touch with a person who would possibly tackle it. I had the occasion of getting an estimate for a client to restore a pretty rough polar bear a few years ago, the price was steep and the client declined having it done.

The only thing in my opinion would be to "laminate" to a backer of some sort. It will not be ribbon worthy but it will be the best you can do. Hope this helps
