"WINGTIPS" # 36 Wrapped body/Foam Body Surface "Prep"

Well here we are into another New Year, New Decade, WOW!! Time does fly. This Wingtip is something I have been experimenting with for about a Year now and I am VERY pleased with the results. Its a simple concept I came up with Mainly for problems that were bothering me with excelsior Wrapped bodies, It bugged me when I was sewing up birds on wrapped bodies having the thread "catch" on the excelsior strands AND the fact that I noticed that the skin sometimes "hung up" while taxiing the skin on a wrapped body. Foam bodies were nice for the fact that they had a SMOOTH surface that the skin slid around easily on BUT I primarily wrap my bodies SOOO..... I came up with the simple idea/technique to make a wrapped body have that "smooth" texture. Its quite simple after you have your body wrapped and neck attached I SIMPLY wrap it with paper towels and bind it all together with fine thread. I have found that the wires anchor better, the sewing process never "hangs up" on fine excelsior strands sticking out of the body, The skin taxis nicely against the smoother surface AND in reality IF any remaining body fluids want to leak out they are quickly absorbed by the paper toweling. Another benefit is when using caulk or liquid nails under the skin it no longer "sluffs or slides down" and stays where you want it, And for the users of all foam bodies, I DO use this technique on foam bodies also with great results. Is it a Necessary step, I would say no, ... But it sure has made my day putting birds together more pleasant and I do notice the results in the assembly of the bird and the positioning/Taxing of the skin. With all that said Here are a few photos of the technique! Good Luck!!
I do have several "upcoming" "Wingtips" photographed, Just need to be in the mood AND have time to post them up. Here's some upcoming topics:
Detachable train on a peacock
Simple eye "prep" and eyesetting methods
Re-hydrating salt dried skins and Freezer burnt skin Methods
Removing rust stains from waterfowl
I am sure those will take me some time to get posted up we will see as time goes by if the interest is there, Happy New year to all.!!

Thanks, And yes Nancy it is a chachalaca tail, not to many people would have noticed that
Here's a pic of the mount. Was a salted skin with some "Damage" But I am pleased as they are difficult to obtain. This is also the bird mounted on the foam body wrapped in PT in the last photo.

Make sure every one uses Brawny paper towels. They are much better than Bounty. (especially since they're made by my company, Georgia Pacific
