I would personally keep the capes in a plastic trash bag. Another thing you could do is clean your work area with a bleach soultion or a detergent. Then go over it again with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbbing alcohol) the 70% works better than the 90% because the other 30% is water which has oxygen in it. Clean up the area after you work each day and change the detergent type every once and a great while to keep the bacteria from getting used to it. That is if you suspect thats the reason.
