Home made Tanning Salts.

A couple of years ago I got this recipe for tanning salts. The questions I have are going to create quite a few heated discussions but I am looking for the pros and cons about making my own tanning salts. As well as where to get the chemicals from.

100 lbs Salt
90 lbs Alum
5 lbs Soda Ash

I have been told Sea Salt is the best to use, and assume Alum is Aluminum Sulfate.

What are your opinions as well any other suggestions.

There are many ways to cut costs & a good businessman should explore them. But there are places where cutting costs should not be done. Like experimenting with unproven chemical mixtures on customer capes. Cyclone has it right Taxidermists like to mix chemicals together to see what will happen.
One question for you.....how do you test to see what will happen to your customers trophy 5-10 years down the road.

That's the auto tanner recipe for the tanning crystals. But I think your salt and alum lbs. are reversed.

Those are all most definitely salts and you can indeed "make them", but how do you plan on making them?

I think that it would be cheaper to buy them...

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. They are one and the same...

Re-hydrate! It is an important step.

Aluminum sulphate and salt will definitely make a FINE tannage. Contrary to what you hear or have read....I think most taxi`s would be SHOCKED to learn that probably 90% of the commercial tannery`s still use a alum tan or a alum/syn tan hybrid....OOOPS did I just say that...LOL...please disregard...LMAO...

Yes this is the tanning crystal recipe that I have, Hopefully someone can let me know if it is correct or if I do have the salt and Alum reversed.

I am not looking at making the salts themselves, I am trying to figure out where to get each one if I do have the correct recipe.

If I am not mistaken this is a proven recipe, my reason for posting this question was to first find out if it is, second to find out where to get the needed ingredients, and third to see if someone has a better idea.

I do thank everyone for their comments so far and keep them coming.

Many of the taxi suppliers sell aluminum sulphate as well as other chemicals used in tanning.  A typical alum tan for static(vat) tanning would be approximately those quantities you listed for 100 gal. of water.

We are in the process of formulating a basic alum tan recipe for beginners and seasoned tanners alike, to demonstrate what can be accomplished with a basic alum tannage for taxidermists and furriers and leather craftsmen.  Look for it soon.  Regards
