Sculpture in progress

This is the first of a series that I want to make..all mythical creatures. It still has some serious work to do on it but is close to finished. Wha-da-ya think?

Sorry I missed our drawing session at the convention. We will definitely meet up next time and I will be more prepared.

Thanks Nina...Im going to change the style of hair a bit to make it more flowing and take away that 'walmart resin nick-nack' look....then a loincloth like thing on the bottom should bring it up to par, i hope.
This clay that im using is really great stuff...expensive but great.

Seriously though, your sculpt is looking freakin awesome! I'm digging the emotion he has!!! I love seeing the artwork in this section. It's so inspiring.

Oh, forgot to ask... how'd you texture the hair? I'm at point where I'm scratching my head on how to do that for mine...

Tell you the truth Lou, hair is the most difficult thing that I have to make. No matter how I do it, it just doesnt seem to come out the way I want.
The beard and chest hair on this guy were done with the 'scratch' method...basically a sharp pin is used to scratch the pattern into the the clay, leaving a deep gouge and a ridge, the ridge is then smoothed off with a brush leaving a raised section and a furrow at the same time, giving depth.
The hair on the head is rather poorly done...much too choppy and not what I wanted. Im going to talk with Jason S. about hair texturing this week, Ill let you know how that turns out.
Other than that try looking at other sculptures and try to replicate them...sometimes putting triangular pieces of clay on to represent each lock of hair works too...then texturing and smoothing them into place. That works for shorter hair...
Hair is a pain..
