Krowtan gives the taxidermist lots of control, slipage will not be an issue if you follow directions. It makes a hide easy to shave. I've used it for years in my shop. But I do believe that a good tanning oil must be used!!!!

That is not true. Slip is from bacteria,, if the cape has it before it gets to your door, Krowtann will not reverse it.

I use the Lutan F system myself for my hides, however i have tried krowtann on beaver hides and smaller and have had success. Still nervous about using at on regular basis, so i figure on staying with Lutan even though it takes more time.

Im new to this so I hope my question is going in the right place. Someone said that they thought it was important to use oil on Krowtanned hides. I would like to now why, I have been using it for a year and a half without any probs. Just wondering if im missing something. Thanks for any response

Simply because Krowtann has the pH of a pickle and to complete any tan, you need to apply an oil to keep the cellular structure soft and supple. The oil "relaxes" the effects of the strong pickle and allows you to have "stretch" in your hide.

Thanks again George-- another question, do you have to put a tanning oil on a deer cape that is Krowtanned before it is mounting. I have mounted several without and was wondering if I would have any problem down the road.

Tanned collagen fibrils still collapse onto each other and stick together when they dry. The effect of tanning is profound, but not complete.
Oiling lubricates the fibrils and allows them some independent movement as the skin dries.
The importance for mounted hides is that the oil dampens the effects of humidity, both in expansion/contraction stresses, and in the slowing of acidic hydrolysis, or the build of a acid in the hide.
Without oiling, the hide will be behave much more like rawhide, or "preserved" hide, and the pleasing appearance of the mount will be short lived as compared to the alternative.

The best oil depends on the type of tan. Give Brian a call and ask him what the tan is.
One can hope that their oil has been matched to the tan.
Must be mixed in water. The amount of penetration depends largely on how small the emulsified particles are; the smaller the better.
A surfactant doesn't hurt.
The best oil I ever used was fairly thin, and the manufacturer recommended a 50% cut with mineral spirits.
Talk about a beautiful soft leather. They don't make it any more.
